Summary of Reviews
We have read all expert and user reviews on the Argon 18 Gallium. In summary, this is what cyclists think.
14 reasons to buy
- By all reports, the Gallium maneuvered precisely on fast corners.
- Galliums were lauded for being stiffer than a flagpole on the 4th of July.
- At 790g in medium, the monocoque Carbon frame is a featherweight.
- In sprints, the Gallium Pro was aggressively fast.
- The Gallium’s Geometry offers a race-oriented, forward-leaning ride position.
- Reputedly, the Gallium Pro climbs like a frightened cat.
- The Gallium Pro was said to be stable on descents.
- Argon’s ‘3D’ system allows headtube lengthening by up to 2cm.
- Ultegra groupsets performed sans-flaws in braking and shifting applications.
- In Red Matte and Black Gloss, the color scheme was well-liked.
- The Gallium retains a minimal and modest, low-key design.
- Tire clearance on the new Pro Disc model has been expanded to 30mm.
- A traditional, 27.2mm seatpost width contributed to compliance.
- On the rear stay, the Disc Pro is provisioned with a chainsuck protector.
8 reasons not to buy
- A few reviewers saw the Gallium as less aggressive than some of its competitors.
- Fulcrum Racing Quattro wheels seemed overweight and underspecced for race use.
- A tester expected the lighter Dura-Ace groupset at the Pro’s proffered price.
- On 2016 models, testers said the cockpit felt insufficiently stiff on descents.
- Some reviewers would have preferred 160mm rotor/s over the 140mm specced.
- Vibration damping was modest. The Gallium could tire with judder transmission.
- As a non-aero design, the Gallium demanded more rider input at high speeds.
- One owner’s toptube showed striations. Argon would not warranty the frame but warned against use.
Bottom line
The Canadian marque Argon 18 is no lightweight. Well, maybe in terms of the Gallium’s traditionally diamond-shaped monocoque carbon frame. But, as a present and past sponsor of various pro teams, the manufacturer’s efforts are results proven. While the Gallium has retained a traditional geometry and understated frame since 2016, reviewers agreed that it was tried and true on climbs and sprints. The Gallium was seen as an everyday ride, while the Pro was more suited to racing. Aluminum wheels were sometimes seen as a compromise to value. Also, the Gallium received mixed reviews as relates to long-distance comfort. In short, this isn’t a comfort cruiser. It’s a competitive rig that’s race proven.Expert Reviews
