Summary of Reviews

We have read all expert and user reviews on the Riese & Müller Carrie. In summary, this is what cyclists think.

15 reasons to buy

  • Experts laud the bike's high-quality construction and "beautiful" finish.
  • The Carrie's basic cargo capacity is hugely expanded by the optional 90L Flex Box, which accepts a kid’s seat accessory for carrying two children.
  • The 82”-long Carrie is relatively compact for a front-load cargo bike, while still offering significant carrying capacity with the Flex Box installed.
  • Reviewers relish the Carrie's maneuverability.
  • Testers say the bike's handling inspires confidence, even for smaller and less-experienced cargo riders.
  • The Flex Box is lockable and quickly closes to reduce the bike's footprint.
  • In a crash, the Flex Box's position inside the frame and the lid’s extra width and padding help protect children.
  • The Magura MT4 brakes provide ample stopping power.
  • Reviewers love how easy the kickstand is to operate.
  • The enviolo hub and Gates Carbon belt drive are “smooth”, grease-free, quiet, and allow shifting when stationary.
  • Most experts praise the ride comfort, especially with the optional suspension seatpost.
  • The Carrie comes with a rain cover, lights, fenders, a cafe lock, and a bell.
  • Tool-free handlebar adjustment enhances the family-friendly stated height range of 4'11" to 6'7".
  • The wide range of accessories includes a MIK HD rack rated for 59lb.
  • An optional chip provides GPS tracking, theft alerts, and help recovering a stolen bike.

9 reasons not to buy

  • Testers report a lag of one and a half crank turns for assistance to kick in, making it hard to maintain balance when setting off, especially up hills.
  • Experts complain that the turning radius is wider to the right than to the left.
  • Reviewers say the kids’ harnesses are finicky, uncomfortably tight when adjusted correctly, and slip over shoulders when loosened.
  • Carrying capacity is poor without the optional Flex Box.
  • Some experts feel the 75Nm torque output is low, saying the bike is underpowered when fully loaded and steep hills require a lot of effort.
  • Riders with bigger feet report their feet hitting the cargo box.
  • One expert says riding at low speeds when loaded requires care and good bike handling skills.
  • The optional headrest for the kids' seats stops the Flex Box closing.
  • The 342lb payload capacity is quite low for a cargo e-bike.

Bottom line

Riese & Müller’s Carrie is a compact front-load cargo e-bike available with 14.4Ah or 19.2Ah batteries. Buyers can choose belt drive and hub gearing (City, Vario) or traditional 10-speed (Touring). This bike requires the Flex Box upgrade to maximize its potential. Reviewers praise the comfortable ride, especially with the optional suspension seatpost. The maneuverability, easy handling, compact frame, feature-rich Flex Box, high-quality build, and safety for children impress. However, delayed power delivery, low torque, asymmetrical turning, and finicky harnesses frustrate testers. While most reviewers consider the Carrie a "great" compact electric box bike, the drawbacks are disappointing at this price.

Why This Motor? Riese & Müller Carrie Test [German]

The Carrie is a great, compact Long John whose biggest advantage is the great Flex Box… Riese & Müller has made the most of the short overall length and loading area volume… Only the motor is the big disadvantage of this otherwise great bike.

The New Riese & Müller Carrie Touring Review – Clever Transport All-Rounder With Style?

The Riese & Müller Carrie impresses with high theft protection, comfort, and versatile adjustability… However, it shows weaknesses in traffic, as the challenging handling when loaded makes it better suited for advanced riders. Wobbly starts and sensitive steering require practice and skill.
